FDA Musical Theatre

A strong and diverse professional skill set is a must for all Musical Theatre performers, however to us that not only means being a triple threat performer but also being an individual with the ability to create and produce original and innovative work. 

Our 2-year FdA is an intensive programme that offers the opportunity for students to develop and acquire the necessary technical and artistic skills to become professional Musical Theatre performers. Alongside this it will provide you with a clear contextual understanding of the wider industry to ensure you are fully prepared to enter an ever-changing and dynamic sector. 

Throughout your training, you’ll explore the core techniques of acting, voice and dance, whilst developing a wide range of knowledge in devising, developing a production, Musical Theatre for stage and screen, audition and casting techniques delivered by a range of specialist professional practitioners. Additionally, you’ll have regular performance opportunities throughout the programme to help develop a diverse range of technical performance skills preparing you for the industry.

The successful completion of our 2-year FdA provides the platform for aspiring performers to begin their professional career in Musical Theatre. For those students wishing to continue their training there is the option to continue your training upon one of our specialist top-up pathways to gain a full BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre or specialist chosen pathway.

104 UCAS points from at least one, but preferably two, A2-levels (or equivalent such as BTEC or HND) and experience of dance is preferred.

You will be required to attend an audition as part of the application process. The quality of the audition is the primary basis on which applicants, with at least the minimum entry requirements, are selected.

fees and funds

For undergraduate courses, the tuition fee is £9,535 per year. Students can apply for student finance through their local government, which covers maintenance loans and grants to help with living costs.

Once enrolled in September, students may also apply for bursaries, which provide additional financial support. Eligibility and the amount awarded will depend on individual circumstances. We encourage students to explore all funding options available to ensure they can focus on their studies without financial concerns.

Compulsory Additional Costs:

  • Enrichment Fee – A one-off enrichment fee is required as part of your course entry. This fee helps cover the cost of various extras throughout your time at Shockout, including costumes, additional workshops and classes not included in the course’s KIS hours, contributions towards shows and trips, and coach fees for events. The fee is refundable if you do not meet the requirements of your offer for entry, if you cannot provide a satisfactory medical report, or if you withdraw within the first 6 weeks after the course start date. Estimated cost: £350 – one-off payment.
  • Medical Report – You will need to provide a satisfactory medical report signed by your GP, confirming that you are fit to undertake full-time, intensive physical training. This ensures that you are physically prepared for the demands of the course. Estimated cost: Cost varies – one-off payment.
  • Dancewear – If you do not already own suitable dancewear, you will need to purchase the appropriate clothing. Please contact us directly for a full list of required items. Costs will vary depending on your personal preferences and the items you choose. Estimated cost – Varies based on selected clothing items.

Optional Additional Costs:

  • Optional Trips – Throughout the course, we may arrange optional trips that provide valuable exposure to the dance world. These trips are not part of the formal curriculum but can enhance your learning experience. The costs for these trips vary depending on location and type of event. Estimated cost per trip: £15-£30.
  • One Dance Cash Plan – While not compulsory, you may wish to purchase the One Dance Cash Plan to cover the cost of any potential injuries sustained whilst attending the course. This is recommended for peace of mind while undertaking intensive physical training and helps financially throughout the year when needing treatments. More information on this can be provided upon entry. Estimated cost – £80 per annum.
  • Laptop or computer to fully engage with teaching and learning activities if you do not already possess one – estimated cost £200+

Our intensive final  year BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre Top Up course course offers you the opportunity to build on your existing dance-related foundation degree or HND  and the chance for aspiring performs to develop, acquire, and refine the necessary technical and artistic skills to become professional musical theatre performers
